Drink Driving UK Statistics

The UK is home to some of the highest drink driving limits in Europe, with only Malta's restrictions exceeding the 80mg currently in force throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, the legal drink-drive limit is in line with most of the EU at 50mg, which is said to account for an 11.5% fall in drink-drive death rates in people aged 18-25 on the content.

Nevertheless, the UK has seen a huge fall in drink driving-related fatalities in recent times. In the 16 years between 1991 and 2006, the average number of drink driving fatal accidents per year was 478. Then the figures started to drop, with the 5 years between 2010 and 2014 seeing provisional estimates of 224 drink driving fatal accidents per year.

Unsurprisingly, most incidents of failed or refused breath tests occur on weekends, with 2,232 such cases taking place in 2014 from Fridays to Sundays, compared with 1,449 failed or refused breath tests from Mondays to Thursdays.

Meanwhile, Wales lays claim to the top 5 postcodes for drink driving offences by proportion, with Crewe said to be the drink driving UK capital with a rate of 1.74 offences per 1,000 drivers.

Over in West Yorkshire, on the other hand, Bradford has the fourth lowest rate in the country at 0.68 offences per 1,000 drivers, a figure bettered only by postcodes in the London area.
